DREW CHARPENTIER
Born and raised in Louisiana. Twenty-two years old. I am primarily a relief and intaglio printmaker.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Dissection
I have channeled my interest of the grotesque into my art. I learned through my exploration of anatomical figures that there is a beauty hidden within this bloody mess. The soft curving forms and the textural membranes of the organs bring to mind peaceful landscape scenes. To allow other people to view these texturally rich scenes in the same light that I do, I use abstractions to illustrate my forms, removing it almost entirely from its source material. I work monochromatically combining drawing and prints to create collages; I focus primarily on texture and form.
I draw my imagery from dissections from medical classes and journals. I tend to use mostly frogs and birds; this is because the organs from other species are more foreign and interesting than the human form.
